History of US Federal Funding of Science
Details
The US has been the Science Superpower for longer than we can remember, literally funding global breakthroughs and being the source for a large chunk of practices concerning the development of empirical sciences.
This presentation traces the turbulent history of shocks and shifts—from the Civil War-era land grants and the atomic bomb, all the way to Sputnik and the new ARPA-H and CHIPS Acts. We show exactly how our complex, multi-layered science machine was built.
This will not teach you how to earn any particular grant but hopefully will help you understand how the vast moneys allocated by Congress turn into research.
