I am pleased to announce yet another online meetup! Joining me this time will be Todd, a product designer, focusing on the design system for Flexport. He will walk us through everything needed to make a quality design system, from the initial states of their philosophy all the way to their final form we are usually familiar with.

Todd R Lewis - Senior Product Designer - Design System, Flexport

Let's break down design systems. Then build them back up.

Todd — is a Senior Product Designer - Design System, with Flexport. Where I will be leading the design system team and initiatives. Progressing the work on their proprietary design system 'Latitude'. In addition, Todd has supported and mentored junior to mid level designers in both curriculum based and at work/project focused environments. Todd has held positions responsible for hands-on UX/UI duties and deliverables, as a product and project lead. Also, with experience in creating engagement models for projects to manage design teams ranging from 2 to 10 person teams. As well as leading multi-team efforts. From start-ups to large corporations, Todd's focus is about using design to understand problems. The resulting outputs are design solutions. A father of three, a passionate designer, philosopher of a wide range of topics and a Star Wars buff that contributed to the Mandalorian Merc Charitable Group that raises money for good causes, while giving out hi-fives and smiles.

A 'design system' should not be defined just as, or by a, component/pattern library(ies), style guide(s), specification documentation and like assets compiled in one accessible place. Rather, the system establishes a set of principles or procedures as an organized framework or method for using [the] assets therein. Start with an ethos and philosophy, to form a strategy reflective of product vision, to define a tactical means to implement and scale the system's assets with your product(s) and team(s). Design systems should not be ivory towers. They are the ether and connective tissue for teams. And the language of the experience and interaction design of the product(s). Supporting process to arrive at solutions.
