Good City web service resources for those looking to use geographic layers: http://data.ohouston.org/dataset/reference-city-of-houston-gis-services

Hi. Just putting a plug out there. Please join Human Trafficking Campaign hackathon project. The project is about scraping adult escort section of the Backpage.com (http://houston.backpage.com/online/classifieds/AdNotFound?category=4443) to gauge commercial sex availability in Houston: https://github.com/sketch-city/project-ideas/issues/11

This is a huge problem that destroys lives, I will take a look at it.

    • Jeff R.

I have been doing text mining and word correlations in R recently. I am also happy to take a look at any datasets you assemble.

If I want to bike to the event, is there a place where I can securely store my bike?

    1 · May 13

    • Jeff R.

Yes, but you will need to bring a lock. You can lock it up in the (gated & inaccessible) back parking lot. Just walk it through the venue.

      May 13

    • Jeff R.

You can also lock it to a wrought iron fence in the breezeway between the HTC and the annex.

What time do the presentations start on Sunday?

    1 · May 12

    • Jeff R.

We plan to start around 1p. It can go 10 minutes in either direction, though.

  • James J.

Super excited about this. I'm happy to help on any projects. My area of expertise is Ruby and Ruby on Rails but I'm comfortable with pretty much any tech stack or framework.

Hello, are teams are already set up ? Is there any team already constituted for the bikeways app?
    Thanks

Is there any HipChat, Slack or IRC channel where we can discuss ideas in real time? Or ideas that aren't in the repository?

    1 · May 11

  • John

If there are ever opportunities to volunteer I would love to get involved.

    1 · May 11

  • Ek E.

How much are tickets to the event?

    1 · May 11

    • Sarah R.

It's free! Just RSVP here and you'll be good to go.

      1 · May 11

    • Jeff R.

That is my absolute favorite thing about it. We have community members who donate $3000+ to make this event free, and we all volunteer our time to make it happen.

  • Sriram H.

Hi, me and my team were wondering if there is going to be a theme for the hackathon? Or can we just make anything? Thanks!

    1 · May 10

    • Jeff R.

Hi Sriram, you are welcome to work on anything you want. The theme is civic tech, so only civic-focused projects can present at the end. This is a pretty huge universe, so we put together an exhaustive list of project ideas. If you have any questions, let me know. Looking forward to meeting you! https://github.com/ske...

hey everybody, I'm a graphic designer and just moved from Chicago, Illinois. I've always liked the idea behind hackathons and am really interested in urban projects especially those that deal with transportation, improving technology, and mapping. I'm not a programmer but really find other fields like it interesting, including making apps and websites. I've been trying to get my mind around understanding machine learning in past few months. If anyone has come across a project that might benefit from a designer's input/collaboration, please let me know—nice to be here! :D

    Hey everyone!
Do we have to be at the location by 11:30, is there possible that i can show up a little later say around 2-3 because im going to be in waco, tx for graduation that morning!

    • Randall B.

There end game is something like NYC checkbook. My fear is at this point we may be too late but also that if I ask for the three datasets, payroll, contractor payments and any specfic to CenterPoint not included in those that may blow away the current portal.

      May 9

    • Randall B.

Would there be data on the portal and the third party payroll site that a program could pull and cross on.

    Hello all,
I am new in Houston and very interested in urban planning. I know nothing about coding or webdesigning, but I really like thinking of creative ways to make a city a better place.
Do you think I could be useful in the hackathon? How can I see the projects going on and try to get on board?
    Thanks
    Chloé

    • Carla

Hi Andrew, What time does morning coffee start and is it at the same location?

      May 3

    • Andrew D.

Carla, there is another event for it posted in the same Meetup Group. It's at the same location and it starts at 9am.

      May 4

  • Randall B.

It would be good to give them some lead time.

    April 27

  • Randall B.

Wouldn't anyone like to see something like the payments to electrical contractors by COH, payments to Centerpoint by COH for led light installations, COH payroll records for electricians. Then try to figure out if the city is paying twice or more? Other interest like that? Not have to agree to a TOS to work with that data?

    April 27

  • Randall B.

So the accountability project does not want the data free of restrictions placed by PDF and the contractors?

    April 27

  • Randall B.

OK, so I met with Alex Obregon Wednesday and he would be amenable to providing any data the Controllers Office has and in a non PDF format. I do not know SaaS which is where there data is now but I am guessing someone here does and could tell us what format to ask for. I would think it would be best to ask sooner than later if we want some for Hackathon. If no one responds I will ask for something but would rather ask for something that interest folks other than me.

Can my teen (almost 15) with programming experience (Python and web design) participate?

    1 · March 6

    • Jeff R.

Yes! Every year, there are usually 10-20 middle & high school students who participate. Your son/daughter will be able to join a team of teens or adults - up to them!
