Why not to be shy

I get a lot of messages like this:

"Dear Jesse, I am afraid to attend and take part in figure drawing. It seems difficult. I feel I might embarrass myself with my lack of skills."

If a similar thought has occurred to you, it might help to read my response:

"I hear this sentiment a lot, but there's really nothing to be nervous about. I've purposely structured the meetup to avoid any potential for judgement and embarrassment. We each sketch independently, and when we share our work we place it down so everyone can see, but no one really knows (or cares) which work is whose. If even that is too intimidating, you're not forced to share your work; you could keep it to yourself. The atmosphere of the entire session is casual.

"Come to think of it, in a few decades of attending art groups and classes, I've almost never heard a negative comment at all. Even in art school, what was usually condemned by a professor was lack of effort, not lack of skill. No one will denigrate honest attempts to improve.

"And all of that is mostly moot anyway, if you consider art as an act of self-expression instead of an act of verisimilitude. From that point of view, which is very much one that our group takes, there are no wrong answers in art.

"Hope that makes you feel a bit better."
