Details

Near Arthur Storey Park.
7400 W. Sam Houston Pkwy. South, Houston, Texas 77072
(Basically on West Beltway 8, Southbound Side, Between Bellaire & Beechnut.)

***Our actual location is 1/8 mile west of the park, on the other side of Brays Bayou on the concrete runoff pad. I come here often to fish, jog, do 4-wheeling, dirt biking, meditation by the pond, etc. It’ll be an excellent location for a quasi-dark site.

***Exact Coordinates. Copy/Paste into GPS map. 29.69819° N, 95.56261° W

The park’s parking lot closes at sunset, so don’t park in it, your car will be there overnight until the lot reopens. There are 4 main access points into the reservoir and all lead to any section of the reservoir. If you are not familiar with the reservoir layout/landscape/topography do not wander off by foot or vehicle away from staging area. Most of the vehicle trails are narrow, very winding, often muddy in some spots and there’s several sharp drop offs. It’s a great little piece of nature sort of tucked away within the city, but precautions are necessary. If anyone wants to check out other sections I’ll gladly go with as a safety escort.

+ The best entry point is off Carvel Lane behind Chambers Elementary School. 10700 Carvel Ln, Houston, TX 77072.

Carvel Lane pavement literally ends and turns into a grass trail continuing into & around the top of the reservoir. It’s a safe wide trail. If anybody would like an added measure of comfort I’ll gladly meet you at the school so you can follow me around to the staging area.

I and a lot of other people actually drive down into the reservoir to play around, camp, set up for archery, horseback riding, flying kites with the kiddos, there’s little hideaway nooks, etc.

It’ll make a terrific spot for stargazing & telescope viewing. While there’s certainly a haze of city light pollution 360° it’s actually not bad at all and most importantly there’s practically zero home, road, building or car lights nearby blinding our eyes which ruins dark adjusted vision.
