Welcome to the third installment of the SS SLUG meetup this month. This month we have a couple of interesting topics focusing on SQL Server's database engine and data warehousing. ENTRANCE: FREE

SESSION #1:

SQL Server Myths by Prasantha Liyanage - Consultant Software Engineer, Mazarin

As a developer who is working with SQL Server you must have heard plenty of misconceptions about SQL server. What you might not know is that these misconceptions are in most cases, myths. In this session, Prasantha will go through several of these myths and misconceptions, and explain what actually happens behind the scenes. This session will be a great opportunity for you to learn some new points about transactions, SQL Server memory allocation, indexes and nulls that you probably never touched on before.

About Prasantha:

Prasantha has over 10+ years of development experience, and works as a Consultant SoftwareEngineer at Mazarin (Pvt) Ltd. He has been working on the Microsoft SQL Server stack since SQL Server 2000.and holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from University of Ruhuna.

How to Solve the Slowly Changing Dimension Problem Using Temporal Tables by Nisal Mihiranga - Tech Lead - DW/BI, Sydney Professionals

Microsoft introduced some very interesting features with SQL Server 2016, for business intelligence and data warehouse development . Although some of these features are part of Database Engine, their benefits can be reaped for data warehousing, especially something like Temporal Tables. Lets dig into temporal tables and discuss about its usage in Slowly Changing Dimensions.

About Nisal:

Nisal is a Technical Lead in DW/BI, a Microsoft Certified Professional in SQL Server, and a researcher who has around 5 years' experience in the software development Industry. He has been working on the Microsoft Business Intelligence stack over 4 years with various projects including data integration, data warehouse development and report development with both relational and multi-dimensional databases. Currently he is working at Sydney Professionals (SydPro). He has published his thesis at IEEE which is related to data analytics in 2013.
