South Baldy via Baldy Pass

Details

As always weather and trip conditions will determine what we do. Continuing on for our mountain conditioning prep we step up the distance and elevation. While this is typically an out and back hike on a good trail to a forested ridge ascent to the true ridge and then undulating with some scrambles prior to the summit it will challenge us since we will be moving at a steady pace. The plan is to return the same way. Alternatively, depending on conditions we may descend from the South and West col and make this a loop trip.
🌲 Difficulty Rating: S6 Moderate Scramble (Experienced Scramblers only) Rock helmets mandatory https://docs.google.com/document/d/10Q442Ouz2wjjN3NFLGJ0lBQRW3D0jfZiPU2WfnyVXGk/edit?tab=t.0
🌲 Distance: <13 km
🌲 Elevation gain: <900 meters
🌲 Time: ≤10 hours + driving
🌲 Max Group Size: ≤8 (No children, pets or guests)
🌲 Meeting Location: Shoudice Park & Ride and then to the Baldy Pass Trailhead.

🌲Weather: https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Bogart/forecasts/3144
🌲 There is a waitlist. If we have not hiked together before, please answer the question regarding your hiking experience. Only those answering the questions will be considered for this trip. The waitlist is not first come, first serve, but based on ability to fit into the group to make the hike enjoyable for everyone.
🌲 Pace for this event will be based on keeping the group within sight of each other. In other words as fast as the slowest of us. We will be stopping for typical breaks - delayering, relayering, refueling & bio breaks.

🌲 Mountain Must Haves:

  • Be prepared for all trip conditions: i.e. personal first aid kit, Rock Helmet, toilet gear, hydration(suggested 2l), food/fuel, wind/snow/rain shell, insulating layer/gloves, approach shoes or boots for alpine terrain, positive attitude & sense of humor.
  • Backpack to carry must haves and recommended gear.

🌲 Recommended gear:

  • bear spray
  • bug spray
  • light pad to sit on
  • trekking poles
  • sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • gloves for scrambling

🌲 WAIVER: You must sign our club waiver before you are allowed to go on this trip and you shall provide an emergency name and phone number to the organizer(kept confidential). There will be a group waiver for you to sign at the trailhead. You are required to read the Slow and Steady Hiker Club Waiver: https://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/

🌲 And now here's a more realistic waiver description attributed to Hugh Magill and adapted for our trip:

  • I am not the leader and am merely advising of an opportunity to participate with other like minded enthusiasts/addicts in joining the above noted trip. Although I am familiar with this trail that means nothing as conditions continually change from type 1 fun to type 3.
  • The location, directions, distances, times, elevation gains trail conditions, water crossings and any pertinent details about the trip are estimates only and may or may not be real, factual or in any way correct.
  • It may be dark, cold, wet, muddy, hot, freezing and windy during the trip and the only fun may be in seeing others suffer or enjoy type 2 fun.
  • Any photos taken during the trip may be published or shared with others regardless of how they make you appear.
  • I am not insured nor do I carry any insurance for losses, injuries or deaths that may occur as a result of or while you are participating in this trip.
  • You are responsible for researching the intended route and should be able to read a map and navigate the trail, or be able to use a GPS app, navigational gizmos or gadgets.
  • I am not strong enough or brave enough to defend or protect myself or anyone else from potential attack from wild or domesticated animals. Although I may carry bear spray in the event that it is needed you may be inadvertently sprayed or outrun by others.
  • While having some backcountry survival skills you will not find me on any reality show. I can only and will only carry enough food, water, clothing, or lighting for my own needs.
  • The people who will be on the trail with you may be hazardous to your health. The trails we will be on may be hazardous to your health. You will be exposed to other hazards - natural, unnatural, supernatural or any combination thereof, and your participation in this trip is wholly voluntary and at your own discretion and risk.
  • You are responsible for your own health and well-being. You are over the age of 18 and of sound mind and body.
  • You are a superbly conditioned athlete capable of feats that most mortals would not consider.
  • Your having read this waiver and still showing up for the trip will be taken as your consent, acknowledgement and acceptance of all of the above risks, terms and conditions.
