Hi! My name is Monica, and I only started playing Irish traditional music on the fiddle last year during work trips to Galway. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to start a similar beginners session closer to home. I'd love to share a little of that experience with anyone who would like to give it a try and have some fun. Hopefully, one day we can all meet up in Galway for a pint and a few tunes!

Have a look at the video from our own session in Lisbon last month (see Discussion tab on our Facebook event) to get an idea of the pace. If you're wondering whether you're "good enough," this is exactly the kind of session we have in mind!
The goal is to set a relaxed and supportive space to learn, practise, and play common trad tunes at a steady, manageable pace.
Who is this for?
Beginners/returners to intermediate players.
Instruments:
Fiddle, tin whistle, flute, uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, tenor banjo, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki, bodhrán, and more.
The vibe:
Completely informal, focused on learning, and strictly non-judgmental. There is absolutely no pressure to play flawlessly! Everyone is welcome, regardless of gender or background, but the session is intended for adults as it takes place in a pub.
You'll find the standard notation for the Galway tune set here. They also have their own YouTube channel if you prefer to learn by ear or play along at home.
A few important things:
- This is a free, non-profit session, but please support the venue by ordering at least one drink! The pub has very kindly offered us the space, and we'd love to support them in return.
