Bridge Lift Viewing 9:15 from Riverwalk - Main Branch of Chicago River.
Details
On Saturday mornings in the Fall, 28 moveable bridges are opened in sequence along the Chicago River to let the sailboats leave the harbor for the season!
At the Michigan Ave Bridge, we can actually go in the gear room and watch the mechanism in action which raises and lowers the bridge!
We will meet at 9:15 to enter the Bridgehouse Museum before the lift happens.
The museum entrance fee is $15.
I have reserved and paid for 7 spots, so you can reimburse me with cash.
If I get people on the wait-list, I can make additional reservations, after confirming availability with the Bridge House Museum.
NOTE: This event is on Saturday because the south arm of the bridge will not be lifted on Wednesdays this year.
NOTE: This walk will be a one-way trip, and NOT the usual round trip walk.
Go down the grand staircase at the southwest corner of the Michigan Ave bridge to the river level. We'll meet under the bridge, where we can see the Columbus Ave Bridge being raised. The city determines the actual timing, so keep your eye on the event Comments in case I need to change our start time, so we don't miss it!
It only takes 45 seconds for the bridge to go up, 8 minutes for the sailboats to pass through and 45 seconds for the bridge to lower.
Then we will meander west on the Riverwalk to watch more bridges lift and lower, ending at the Lake Street Bridge.
Afterward, we can walk across the river to the Chicago French Market, at 131 N Clinton for lunch.
