What Is A Human Being?

What do we mean when we say we are human? Some people say we are just a collection of atoms that operate according to the laws of physics, nothing more. They maintain that when the brain stops, life and the person end - that we are essentially just clever apes, that that is all there is to it. Many other people believe that humans have spirits, and that spirits live on after the body dies.
What do YOU think?
As Humanists our focus is on humanity, however it is defined. The Humanist philosophy respects and embraces the efforts of all caring person of all faiths, all ethnicities, all traditions, and all nations to improve the perilous conditions of humankind. We are not trying to change anyone’s beliefs. But we are curious about what we all may have in common. Why have we formed a democratic society and believe all human life is valuable? If we believe that we are more than just a body, does life have more meaning?
What does it mean to be CERTAIN?
We know that this Holiday Season is complicated for people of different religions and for those who have no religion. Let’s get together for a warm and friendly conversation to help all of us enjoy the holidays.
Our discussion and sharing of ideas will be led by Ron Rubin and Steve James. Your ideas and participation are welcome.
As usual, we will meet from 6 to 9 PM upstairs at the Moonstruck Restaurant located at 449 Third Avenue at the Southeast corner of East 31st Street, New York. Please bring friends and family; have dinner at 6, if you can, but all are welcome anytime. We will start the discussion at 7:00 PM.
