Photo Challenge - Hip to be Square

The square aspect ratio is one of the oldest photo formats around. Old tin types, many legendary medium format cameras, Polaroids, and even Instagram have all featured the square photo.

I challenge you to go out and take a photo with a square composition in mind. If you need any tips on how to crop your photo into a perfect square in LR, PS, or even on your phone - please reach out anytime.

Why? This exercise will help you really think about your composition. A square does not naturally lend itself to our typical rule of thirds. A 4:3 or 3:2 ratio naturally leans into it, while the square is easily divisible by 3rds, the eye doesn't want to naturally do it. Using a square will change how you see the composition, how you fill the frame and use negative space, and make your brain work differently.

While the idea behind these challenges is to get you to go out and shoot, I also want to encourage you to look through your portfolio and see if there are photos that naturally lend themselves to being cropped differently and yield a different perspective when viewed as a square.
