On this walking tour of downtown Long Beach you will learn more about the history and built environment of the seventh-most populous city in California. Long Beach was originally inhabited by the Tongva people before being divided into ranchos during the Spanish and Mexican periods. In 1881 part of Rancho Los Cerritos was developed into Willmore City, which became Long Beach in 1884. We will visit locations tied to Long Beach's history as a seaside resort and its emergence as a city, one transformed in the first half of the twentieth century by
the discovery of oil in 1921, the 1933 earthquake, and the Second World War. We will also see ample evidence of the city's current re-development and the challenges Long Beach is facing to remain equitable, diverse, and authentic.

This walking tour will cover lots of ground so wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. Don't forget sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Will be postponed due to inclement weather.

The length of the walking tour will depend on the pace of our group. Expect at least 2 hours. You can always leave early and head back to your car, but please notify your host - ME!

After our walking tour, we'll find a place to have lunch and drinks. TBD
