Henninger Flats is one of the best backpacking spots in So Cal. The views are incredible. We'll be sleeping on bluffs overlooking the San Gabriel Valley and you can see all the way to the ocean and LA if the conditions are good. It's free. It's beginner friendly. It's dog friendly. And it's been almost completely deserted during the off season since covid. They'll even allow mini campfires if the conditions are safe.

Backpacking essentials

  1. Backpack (like 30-40 liters)
  2. Tent (they make lightweight ones just for backpacking)
  3. Sleeping bag
  4. Blow up sleeping pad (bring a yoga pad too, for extra comfort)
  5. Stove (I got that covered)
  6. Fuel (I got this as well but we may need more than one tank)
  7. A spork or other eating utensils
  8. Food (they sell amazing freeze dried meals online)
  9. A few paper towels, half rolls of toilet paper, and or wet wipes
  10. A set of warm weather clothing
  11. Extra pair of clothes
  12. Hygiene supplies
  13. Headlamp (extra batteries maybe)
  14. Lots and lots of water

On Saturday morning, we'll begin a hike up to Mt Wilson. It's not beginner friendly. But I believe in you. If you made it to Henninger Flats, you can make it up to Wilson! However, if you wanna save Mt Wilson for another day, you could totally chill at the campsite too, no worries.

There will be a second group of people just doing the Mt Wilson hike, and not the backpacking part. I'll make a separate event for that, but basically, they'll meet up at the "Mt. Wilson / Pinecrest Gate" on Saturday at 8am. They'll hike up to us at the Flats by 10am where we'll join forces and climb that mountain together!

People who only want to stay one night, can join the hiking group heading back down on Saturday after Mt Wilson if they'd like.

Cheers,
Tom
