Join us for a "power" walk!

On this hike my friend and graduate student in power engineering Wade Shepardson will be leading an informal walk-and-talk tour of power grid infrastructure in the Waterfall Glen / Argonne National Lab area. The "talk" is intended for people who want to learn more about the power grid and electricity. The "walk" is for anyone!

Come walk, listen, learn, and ask questions! Wade will have some material to talk about and the route will take us past some power infrastructure including transmission lines and a new substation project.

Topics may include:

  • What is power?
  • What is the power grid - how does electricity make it to our homes?
  • What do power engineers do?
  • Equipment - power lines and other visible infastructure
  • The new ComEd substation project for Argonne National Laboratory
  • Current energy policy and renewables
  • technical details - electricity, power, "the grid", power engineering, power flow, networks
  • operational aspects - ISOs, RTOs, markets, regulation, day ahead markets, real time markets, reserves
