What we’re about

Sortition is the formation of decision-making groups by random selection.

It can be used to fully replace elections or it can be used by elected officials to engage with the public. Sortition can be used to create representative bodies to deliberate on issues one at a time.

We are a group of locals who think elections are not always the best tool. If you think the Republican and Democractic parties suck, if you're an elected official, if you're a YIMBY activist, if you want more bike lanes, come join us. Let's civically engage! Learn from each other, argue over political theory, laugh at politicians (sorry if you are one), and see if we can't save the world.

In the last 20 years across the globe, sortition has been used to address homelessness, gay marriage, voting reform, constitutional reform and more. In this sense, sortition is the activism for activists. Let's harness some of that big tent energy!

We are affiliated with Public Democracy LA, an orgnization seeking to run a Civic Assembly (which is an implementation of sortition) in Los Angeles in 2026.

(Note: I'm Max, a member of PDLA and one of the organizers for this group. I'm also active in Common Ground USA (Georgism), Strong Towns, Abundant Housing LA, and People For Housing OC. I found sortition as I was burning out as an activist and it has completely restored my hope. Feel free to message me with any questions.)
