What we’re about

We are affiliated with Public Democracy LA, an orgnization seeking to run a Civic Assembly (which is an implementation of sortition) in Los Angeles in 2026. Sortition is the formation of decision-making groups by random selection.

Sortition can be used to fully replace elections or it can be used by elected officials to engage with the public. Sortition can be used to create representative bodies to deliberate on issues one at a time. If you think the Republican and Democractic parties suck, if you're an elected official, if you're a YIMBY activist, if you want more bike lanes, if care about animal welfare, if you want to change the government for the good of the people in any way, then come join us. Let's civically engage!

What do you care about? Are you an activist? If not, is that because you think the current system of change is broken? Is that because you have too many obligations and sacrificing your career or the well being of your loved ones is more important than showing up to city hall for a tiny chance of maaaybe influencing an elected politician?

We think sortition can fix that.

(At this meetup, I'm considering trying a new approach: facilitated discussion. We'll break into groups of 3 or 4 and each person will be given a few minutes to talk about their experiences and view of democracy. Maybe we'll roll some dice. Then maybe we'll shuffle around. I don't know! We're experimenting.)
