February SoCal Python meetup at Oscar Health (Playa Vista)

Details

SoCal Python is back for 2020, with our first meetup of the year at Oscar Health!

Please RSVP only if you can come! Otherwise you exclude others from this event, and hurt our sponsor's ability to plan for the correct quantity of food and drink they're generously providing us. If you can't make it, please remove your RSVP!

AGENDA

<< Talk 1 >>

"Internet of Energy: A Pythonic way to support California electrical fire prevention efforts" by CJ Ejimuda, Principal at hybriData

How does the electrical grid deliver power needed to charge EV or power homes/industries? It turns out it isn't fairly straightforward. I will try to make it clearer by introducing the underlying key infrastructures of the electrical grid in California that makes this possible. Furthermore, I will shed light on how mismanagement of these key components could likely result to electrical fires.

Lastly, I will delve into how we can pythonically help the grid by retrieving real time telemetry data from embedded devices integrated into the power grid. I will illustrate this with micropython - a small subset of the Python standard library that is optimized to run on microcontrollers, embedded devices and in constrained environments. With micropython, we can now monitor the health of the grid and of course, perform numerous advanced analytics like predicting the likelihood of electrical fire.

<< Talk 2 >>

"Develop a high performance communication engine in Python" by Young Zhang, Engineer Manager at Oscar

This presentation will discuss the development of a workflow engine tailored for Oscar’s clinical programs. The project started as a highly functional prototype but was quickly adopted throughout Oscar and so demanded a higher degree of scalability. In this talk we’ll discuss distributed system architecture and designing for scale

<< Parking and logistics >>

Office Location:
Building D is directly in front of the main entrance/driveway and labeled with a large, blue, capital D. Enter through the double doors and Oscar’s entrance is to the right. The receptionist will get you signed in.
