What we’re about
I have had a history of dealing with depression and I used to have social anxiety, and shyness. I suppose I still deal with all of that to some degree. I don't have the same problems with shyness, social anxiety or avoidance, that I once had and I want to help others who might be struggling with these things and to create a space for people to share their own experiences in a mutual support type of setting. It's important to realize that even if you don't suffer from social anxiety, you can learn social skills, assertiveness and more. The Interpersonal aspect is drawn from my understanding of Interpersonal Therapy as an approach to treating a variety of conditions.
Note: You do not have to meet the diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder or Avoidant Personality Disorder to attend. We avoid diagnoses and try to focus on strengths. That doesn't mean you can't talk about your diagnosis but focus will be on overcoming, healing, moving past problems.
We are all social creatures. We can help each other cope with problems that others probably don't understand. I bring skills that I have developed from education, training and experience in therapy/psychotherapy/counseling to help you deal with anxiety, depression and the problems we have with our beliefs and thoughts that make us feel bad. We can also work on building social and communication skills.
As a sign that there is hope that we can overcome these things/problems/difficulties, I work as a therapist. This meetup is a mutual support group. I found the tools to achieve these kinds of miraculous accomplishments. While this is a mutual aid support group, I wanted to disclose my talents and skills out of full transparency and a desire to help others as a member of the group.
Note: There are no quick fixes. We cannot fix or perhaps address the unique problems of each person in the group at each meeting. You will get a chance to introduce yourself and share your challenges. You are invited to try each activity even if it doesn't seem relevant as it might be useful later.
Let's support one another. I know I could use the support.
