Discussion - Kropotkin Essays
Details
For out next discussion, to continue the line of prisons and the law, we will be reading some great essays from Peter Kropotkin.
Kropotkin was a Russian anarchist dissident who himself spent time in prison and in exile. The first essay is an attack on the institution of law itself. The second essay directly attacks the prison system. The third essay I have not read yet, but given that its title echoes the Angela Davis book, it seems like a good selection.
The texts can be found here:
Law and Authority: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/petr-kropotkin-law-and-authority
Prisons and Their Moral Influence on Prisoners: http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_Archives/kropotkin/revpamphlets/prisonsmoral.html
Are Prisons Necessary: https://www.panarchy.org/kropotkin/prisons.html
The first two essays can also be found in the (excellent) volume, "The Essential Kropotkin." Again, if you would like a digital copy of that text and cannot find it, please message me.
Given that labor day is coming up, and to make sure people have adequate time to read, I have decided to schedule the meeting for Wednesday, September 13th.
I hope you will join us!
