ZELENI VIR & DEVIL’S PASSAGE – SPECTACULAR CANYON HIKE IN CROATIA
Saturday, 15 August 2026
Meeting time: 11:00 am
Meeting point: Skrad Railway Station, Croatia
Estimated finishing time: 2:00–2:30 pm
Distance: approximately 5–6 km
Difficulty: Hard / Demanding
Entrance fee: €7 per adult
Join Carlos and Ante for a spectacular circular hike through one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Croatia’s Gorski Kotar region.
Starting from Skrad Railway Station, we will descend through the forest towards Zeleni Vir and Vražji prolaz, also known as Green Spring and Devil’s Passage.
Despite its relatively short distance, this is a demanding and adventurous route involving steep forest paths, exposed roots, rocky and potentially slippery sections, narrow bridges, steps and a significant climb back to Skrad. A reasonable level of fitness and confidence on uneven terrain are therefore required.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Zeleni Vir, an emerald-green cave spring beneath a spectacular 70-metre cliff and waterfall
• Vražji prolaz, an extraordinary 800-metre canyon, in places only two metres wide
• Wooden and metal walkways built into the rock above the Jasle stream
• Muževa Hiša, a cave approximately 200 metres long, with a small underground pond
• The historic Munjara hydroelectric power plant, built in 1921
• Geological and botanical educational trails
• Beautiful forest scenery within a protected natural landscape
MEETING POINT
We will meet outside Skrad Railway Station at 11:00 am.
Please arrive by 10:45 am so that we can introduce ourselves and start walking promptly at 11:00.
There is parking around the railway station. The access road to the Zeleni Vir excursion site is currently closed to vehicles, so we will enter the area on foot using the marked circular trail from Skrad.
ENTRANCE FEE
The 2026 entrance fee is €7 per adult and is paid at the entrance to the excursion site. Please bring cash in case card payment is unavailable.
WHAT TO BRING
• Proper hiking boots or sturdy footwear with good grip
• Water
• Snacks or a packed lunch
• €7 for the entrance fee
• Light rain jacket
• Sun protection
• Small torch or phone light for the cave
• A warmer layer, as the cave temperature is approximately 8°C
IMPORTANT
This is not a flat or easy walk. Participants must be comfortable with steep descents, a demanding climb back to Skrad, uneven forest terrain, narrow canyon walkways and potentially slippery surfaces.
The event may be altered or cancelled if heavy rain or unsafe trail conditions are expected. Please check the Meetup page before travelling for any final update.
Everyone participates at their own risk and is responsible for assessing whether the route is suitable for their fitness and experience.
The group will stay together, enjoy the scenery and allow time for photographs, but we aim to complete the hike at a steady pace.
