About us

Join us for a relaxed, hands-on gathering of the Society for Amateur Microscopy (SAM) – Pittsburgh Chapter.

This meetup is for anyone curious about the microscopic world — from mosses and pond water to crystals, fibers, and everyday wonders. Whether you're brand new to microscopes or already exploring advanced techniques, you’re welcome here.

What we do:
• Field collection walks (moss, lichens, soil, water samples)
• Beginner-friendly microscopy guidance
• Show-and-tell of interesting specimens
• Occasional themed sessions (bryophytes, crystals, micro-life)
• Skill sharing across all experience levels

No experience required — just curiosity and a willingness to look closer.

We value:
• Slow observation and real discovery
• Accessible, hands-on learning
• Respectful field ethics in Western Pennsylvania
• Building a welcoming microscopy community

You’re welcome if you are:
• A total beginner with a new scope
• A hobbyist returning to microscopy
• A naturalist or field observer
• A parent with a curious kid
• A lifelong micro-world explorer

📍 Locations vary around the Pittsburgh area (parks, homes, libraries, or labs)
🔬 Some meetups are field-based, others are microscope sessions
🌱 Free and open to all ages

Come look closer with us — there’s an entire universe waiting just beyond the visible.
