Psychotherapy and Mindfulness
‘Who are you?’ said the Caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation.
Alice replied, rather shyly, ‘I – I hardly know, Sir, just at present – at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have changed several times since then.’
– Lewis Caroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
As more and more advanced spiritual teachings and technologies are becoming accessible and popular in the culture today, what does mindfulness have to offer to the practice of psychotherapy? How do we honour client narratives and stories, and still stay grounded in their present moment experience?
In this session we will explore the link between mindfulness and psychotherapy and the usefulness of combining these approaches in our work. We will be guided through a mindfulness meditation, and later explore the Buddhist context in which the practice of mindfulness is rooted. The speaker will share her way of working using these practices with her clients.
Jinny Gupta is a UKCP registered psychotherapist with a private practice in West London. She works with adults, online and in-person. She is also trained in the Mindfulness and Meditation tradition (Zenways) as a student and teacher, and regularly hosts events and workshops in this area.
Jinny’s clinical work is informed by the knowledge offered by psychology and neuroscience, as well as the wisdom of contemplative, meditative traditions of the East. Her practice is rooted in a holistic, trauma-sensitive approach to growth, healing and transformation. She uses both evidence-based techniques as well as creative means like meditation, active imagination to help clients find their subjective truths.
In addition to private practice, she provides clinical support at Orri's (Eating Disorder Treatment Clinic) outpatient unit as well as to NHS frontline workers. She also facilitates clinical supervision for trainee psychotherapists at Headstrong Counselling.
Jinny holds an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy (ADIP) from Regent’s University, London, and a Master’s in Economic Development and Policy Analysis from the University of Nottingham.
