Darkwater, Chapters 1-3

Details

Let's meet-up to continue our discussion of Darkwater: Voices from within the Veil (1920) by Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. This book anticipated modern Pan-Africanism and the culture of anti-colonialism. It joined the battle for civil rights in the United States to a broader campaign against European colonial rule abroad, especially in Africa.

As I wrote in the previous meet-up posting, Darkwater is free online (see link below). You can also check out a copy of Darkwater from your local library or buy your own. I have The Oxford W.E.B. Du Bois Reader, edited by Sundquist and published by the Oxford University Press, which includes Darkwater, Souls of Black Folks, and other major writings by Du Bois.

This will be the second of three meet-ups to discuss Darkwater. We talked about "Of Work and Wealth" at the first meet-up which was about the East St. Louis Riot of 1917. This time we will discuss the following writings from the book:

Postscript

Credo

Chapter I. The Shadow of Years

A Litany at Atlanta

Chapter II. The Souls of White Folk

The Riddle of the Sphinx

Chapter III. The Hands of Ethiopia

The Princess of the Hither Isles

Please come with questions, ideas, and comments. You can find the above readings in Darkwater: Voices from within the Veil by Du Bois at the link below:
