We are constantly sold the idea that more freedom is the ultimate goal. Financial freedom, location independence, relationship autonomy, and unregulated markets. But at what cost?
If one person's absolute freedom is another's unfreedom, what happens when we apply this to our deepest human needs? In our pursuit of ultimate individual liberty, we are experiencing a profound collective suffering. We lose the bedrock of community. We sacrifice genuine love and romantic intimacy. We trade the friction of deep, enduring interconnection for the frictionless, transient illusion of "choice."
In this session, we will move past superficial pop-psychology to confront a difficult paradox: Does more freedom actually pave the road to a private hell on earth? Drawing on the macroeconomic critiques in Joseph E. Stiglitz’s The Road to Freedom and classical sociological concepts of alienation, we will examine how the "free market" mindset has infected our social and romantic lives.
What We Will Explore:

  • The Illusion of Autonomy: How the modern obsession with removing all constraints breeds profound isolation and social anomie, particularly for remote professionals.
  • The Economics of Intimacy: How treating relationships and love as unregulated, transactional marketplaces destroys authentic connection and mutual reliance.
  • The Veil of Ignorance: A thought experiment to determine what social rules we would actually want in place if we didn't know our starting position in life.
  • Rebuilding the Contract: Identifying the specific "freedoms" we must willingly surrender in order to rescue our communities, our partnerships, and our sanity.

Who Should Attend: This is an inquiry-based dialogue for those seeking intellectual honesty over easy answers. Join the SIMO community for a rigorous, respectful, and challenging exploration of the structures that dictate our lives and relationships. Come prepared to question your own definitions of liberty and connection.
