Marriage has existed for thousands of years— but not for the reasons we often assume.

Long before romance, marriage was a practical arrangement. It organized inheritance, stabilized property, formed alliances, and ensured survival. Love, if it appeared, was secondary.

Today, that has changed.

Marriage is no longer about survival. It is expected to fulfill emotional, psychological, financial, and even spiritual needs. It is no longer duty-driven—but expectation-heavy.

At the same time:
Divorce rates remain high • Alternative relationships are more visible and accepted • Individuals are more independent than ever

So we are left with a difficult question:

Does marriage still serve a meaningful function today—or are we holding onto an institution designed for a world that no longer exists?

Discussion Questions
We’ll explore questions such as:

  1. What is marriage to you? What factors matter most (love, financial stability, social recognition, etc.)?
  2. Is marriage fundamentally a legal contract or an emotional commitment?
  3. Are humans naturally monogamous? How important is monogamy in relationships—and why?
  4. Are rising divorce rates a failure of individuals—or of marriage itself?
  5. Should the state have a role in marriage?
  6. If legal protections (inheritance, rights) were handled separately, would marriage still be necessary?
  7. Could marriage be replaced? What alternative relationship structures might work (polyamory, situationship, friends with benefits, open relationships, etc.)?
  8. How might the future reshape relationships? (e.g., technology, AI companions, humanoids, shifting norms)
