Please join us this Sunday to discuss philosophy of science. I'm more interested in discussing how science works in practice and about how it does (or doesn't) help us understand how people and societies work, rather than us try to talk broadly about theoretical physics.

We will meet at the Captain Melville at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.

Please note the new $5 mandatory donation entry fee (cash or transfer on day) to help with MeetUp subscription costs.

There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.

This event is also posted to the Philosophy Circle group.

Some topics that may be discussed include:

  • What is good science? What is bad science?
  • Does something need to be falsifiable to count as good science? What would this mean in practice.
  • Can science be value-free in practice, even if it can be in theory?
  • Were people like Freud and Marx doing science?
  • What has been the impact of the replication crisis in psychology or the credibility revolution in economics?
  • How can we make better quick judgements about what is likely to be credible?
  • Why do most social scientists identify as being from the political left or centre-left? Is this good or bad?

Hope to see you there!
