What makes a good friend?

We are born social creatures. We enjoy, to varying degrees, the company of one another. There are different kinds of relationships: classmate, neighbour, colleague, partner, married, acquaintance, etc. But what makes for someone(s) being a good friend? What about this kind of relationship that contributes so much to our lives? Does merit play a role in friendship? What about intimacy and its place in friendship? Could a ‘good life’ exist without friendship?
