Hi everybody,
We thought it might be useful to open a discussion where people could suggest questions, quotations or topics for exploration at future Socrates Cafe gatherings. Let's see what we can come up.

A few suggestions:
. Are there absolutes in morality?
. How do I know I am not dreaming?
. Human being are not just evolved animals.
. Art is totally subjective.
. Is lying always wrong?
. Can we change the past?
. Is the state necessary for a civilized society?
. Democracy doesn't work.
. Equality is an empty word.

Some great suggestions there, Angelo! I'd like to add the following:

- What is the secret to happiness?
- Is there more to vision than meets the eye?
- Does fate exist?
- What makes us human?
- Can time really heal all?

Great questions above which should keep us happily debating....

Another few for us to mull over a packet of randomer fruit gums:-

- Tax Avoidance although legal is it immoral?
- Assisting a person to end their life although illegal in Ireland is it moral?

What is truth?
Is there an absolute truth?
What is morality?
What is right and wrong?

Western Society and Islam. What’s the problem?

I know, this is a highly controversial topic in today’s world and I think it would require a lot of preparation. Rules, boundaries and a strict, impartial facilitator would be essential. But I truly believe that this is the ‘question of our generation’!

Perhaps I'm being naive in even suggesting it!

Good question John.
My suggestion: do we take the security of our physical environment and material prosperity for granted? Does it make any meaningful I.e. actionable sense to consider alternatives?
And following on from that, can we continue to place human rights in greater priority/importance vs the survival of mankind?

Is it really of great importance to preserve one's native language?

With Japan, China, Russia and much of Europe now having fertility rates well below replacement levels and with third world and developing countries rates still high but falling - Can there be a moral obligation to reproduce or alternatively to limit reproduction? Beyond the common desire to sustain the human race for its own sake, this can and may have major economic, societal and environmental consequences
