I. M.📖Book club📔 "How Emotions are made" By Lisa Feldman Barret

Details
You may think emotions are universal traits humans are subjected to. Emotions arise and pass away, they get triggered, felt, and act upon. The ability to understand them in ourselves and others might be what grants us peaceful and successful interactions with each other. In her book, Lisa Feldman challenges the idea of emotions being “universal”, “triggered” and truly ever fully “understood”. Her work pushes against old assumptions and oversimplified explanations of emotions, inviting us to analyze the brain as the source and active constructor of emotions, not a passive receiver of sensory input. This is not to say everything is in your mind. Emotions are real, not in the same way atoms or gravity, but rather in the way money is real, a product of human agreement.
“How Emotions are Made” touches on subjects of Interoception as the origin of feelings, concepts as the brain's only tool to make sense of our experience, and emotions as the origin of meaning.
Join us for an active exchange of ideas about the book. Remember, this is not a debate, we are here to listen and be listen, not to convince anyone of anything. We gather to speak our thoughts and enjoy the company of others while being mindful and respectful.
