(The meetings discussion questions are listed at the bottom of this description)

We will be at Southeast Regional Library in Room C

About the Group: This is a friendly Socratic Café where we explore big ideas through open conversation. No philosophy background is needed, just curiosity, respect, and a willingness to share and listen.

1. Is War Ever Just – Or Just Human?

a. What do you think it means for a war to be “necessary” or “just,” and who do you think should decide that?

b. Do our instincts for protection and power make war something we can’t fully avoid, or could humanity genuinely move beyond it someday?

2. Modern Tensions: Iran and Israel

a. When leaders talk about self‑defense or “no choice but to respond,” how do you personally decide whether you believe a war is necessary?

b. How do news, social media, and the way people around you talk about Iran and Israel shape your own feelings about who is justified, if anyone?

3. Old Tensions: World War II

a. How did/do school lessons, movies, or memorials about WWII shape the way you think and feel when new wars are described as necessary?

b. If WWII is often seen as a war that had to be fought, how does that affect the way you think about the idea of a “necessary” war today?

4. Types of War: Korea, Vietnam, and Today

a. In what ways do the tensions around Iran and Israel feel similar to earlier conflicts like the Korean and Vietnam wars, and in what ways do they feel different?

b. Does it feel easier to judge whether past wars like Korea and Vietnam were justified than to judge current tensions, and if so, why do you think that is?
