In video games, an “NPC” is a background character who isn’t controlled by a real player. They just repeat the same lines and routines. These days, people use the word to describe someone who seems to go through life on autopilot. But it’s not that simple. Someone who loves their 9-to-5 might know exactly what they’re choosing. And someone who questions everything might just be following a different script.
We’ll start with how we decide who’s really “awake,” then ask the bigger question: are any of us truly free to be ourselves?
