An Evening with Photographer Jan Bell
Bell’s presentation will open with a selection of his work, interwoven with philosophical reflections and quotes on art and photography. The presentation continues with a look into his early years and how they influenced his path. He offers insight into his creative process and shares the development of his photographic style.
He also discusses his extended periods in the wilderness – often lasting weeks or even months at a time – logging over 22,000 miles in 2024 alone. He shares insights on how deep immersion in the natural world can shape one’s work and artistic voice.
Bell speaks candidly about what it takes to succeed as a fine art photographer, including the struggles that come with it. He poses the difficult question: “Why do we do what we do, in a world where so many are striving for the same recognition. If there’s interest, he will be happy to share insights on gallery representation.
He also presents images from his annual workshop along the eastern shore of Lake Superior—a region that propelled his career after he received a $5,000 Luminous Landscape grant. It’s a place that remains close to his heart, and one he has photographed for over three decades. During the workshop, he guides participants to relatively unknown photographic locations, then leads afternoon classroom sessions to help refine the images captured in the field. This year, Craig Blacklock will assist with the workshop. He and his father have dedicated their lives to photographing Lake Superior and publishing acclaimed photography books. Two slots remain during the first of two weeks, if you are interested in registering.
