# Topic: Modern Solution Architecture

In short: The greatest problem with software architecture is that the environment in which our solutions must execute is constantly changing. The history of software architecture is a story of the struggle with this fact as we sought to hold things still long enough to solidify them in code.

Instead of doing this, an approach known as residuality theory allowed the environment to exist in flux, and taught us how to build around uncertainty. This changed how we needed to think about architecture.

Once we discover this, it’s time to rethink what architecture actually is, how to approach it, and how to integrate traditional and new approaches together to allow architecture to change course smoothly.

This talk looks at the kind of subjects that becoming and even senior architects need to engage with in order to be able to engage with architecture in the modern world. Diverging from the view of the programmer, and the old enterprise architecture view, and the agile approach of adaption in real time, a new perspective on architecture is presented that makes everything easier and makes it possible to talk about architecture across different roles, and allows organisations to build their architecture function in a pragmatic and realistic way that doesn’t waste talent on quality gates and meaningless documentation.

Meet Barry O'Reilly: Barry is a veteran Architect who has held Chief Architect positions at Microsoft among others. He has also been a startup CTO, the Worldwide Lead for the Solutions Architecture Community at Microsoft, and founder of the Swedish Azure User Group. He is also a PhD candidate in software design and complexity science.

Host: This free lecture is hosted by Software Leader. We help architects to become better technical leaders.
