SDDG Vol 0x4: Semiotics of Computation and Speculative Execution

Details

SDDG returns for the first session in 2018! We will be discussing two diametrically opposed topics - Semiotics of Computation (whatever that means) and Timing Attacks caused by Speculative Execution (you know this one - Meltdown, Spectre, etc.).

The first part will be a continuation of Pete's presentation on Programming Language Easthetics (and a free-form dwelling into the world of Plan 9 from Bell Labs, Phillip K. Dick and Mental models of computation). The second part will be a deep-dive into the mechanics of some of the recent timing-based attacks (might be a good idea to brush up any Computer Architecture and Assembly Language knowledge for this one).

Of course, the conversation might also go completely off the rails, and that's ok (and encouraged), so feel free to bring your favorite discussion topics, and we might slot it in.

Doors open at 6:30 PM. Entrance to the building is via the alley on Fair Oaks Ave. Second floor. Use the elevator.
