Six and a Half Lessons from a Tech Lead

Details

Join us for the 3rd Software Product Party, hosted by Chris Oakman and The Cannon in West Houston. We're a community learning from each other about the art and science of product building. At the last party we heard a lot about how a product owner built highly functioning teams. This time we'll hear from a remarkable leader on such a team, tech lead Chris Oakman. He has been the lead developer on dozens of software projects over the last 20 years, but may be even more well known in the Houston community as a passionate educator. Chris has taught more than 100 students as a lead instructor at coding bootcamp schools The Iron Yard and DigitalCrafts.

He'll talk about how to track to greatness in software development as a technologist by talking about... his mistakes. Mistakes happen to the best of us. But as the saying goes, a mistake is only a mistake if you don't learn from it. We'll share stories of mistakes and lessons learned from software projects over the last 20 years. Chris will talk about how to build the right thing, stay in your tech tribe, reduce your library surface area, and more, though some developer and company names may be changed in order to protect the innocent.

5:30 - 6:00 networking & intros
6:00 - 6:45 talks
6:45 - 7:30 Q&A and grown-up food

Thanks again to The Cannon in West Houston. The Software Product Party is a wandering affair, meant to be a resource for all of Houston, so we're excited to be in an Energy Corridor friendly location for this one. See you there!
