Many metaphors are employed when talking about software development. We talk of architecture, of engineering, of gardening, of craft, and more. Whether we are dealing with code that comes from the past, from a prompt or directly from our keystrokes, the short-term and the long-term concerns are the same. We need to be able to understand it, to change it and to have confidence in it. In this talk, we will look at what the craft perspective can offer us in terms of care, customer focus, knowledge sharing, skill and use of tools, from testing to pipelines, from LLMs to being the human in the loop.
