This is a full day trip to Crater Lake National Park. No dogs, but fishing at Crater Lake is allowed without a fishing license.
Please bring your purchased Crater Lake Boat Ticket for Tuesday, July 15th at 11:30am to be included on the Boat to Wizard Island.
Bring your National Park Pass if you have one to cover the entrance fee into Crater National Park.
Walking poles are helpful, especially on the rocky trail on Wizard Island. Bring food and water for the day.
Dress for the elements! Sun, wind, and rain. Protect your skin from the high elevation sun. Crater Lake is above 6,000 feet, and Crater Lake Rim is above 7,000 feet. Bring lip balm, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Mosquitoes are often the worst at the Cleetwood Cove Trailhead. Restrooms are available near the boat boarding area at Cleetwood Cove.
Our early morning departure allows us time to get to the Cleetwood Cove Trailhead (including restroom stops, and a possible delay at the fee station entering Crater Lake National Park).
From the Cleetwood Cove Trailhead, it is a little over 1 mile, and a 700 feet descent to the lake level of Crater Lake. Once there, we'll check-in and use the restrooms. We might have time to have a snack. There is also a rock people jump from, to jump in Crater Lake.
After taking the boat and arriving on Wizard Island, we'll disembark, and hike to the top of Wizard Island which is a volcanic cinder cone, less than 2 miles with 700 feet of elevation gain. At the top, we can walk around the circumference of the cinder cone, less than 0.5 miles, and walk down into the cinder cone, about a 90 foot descent.
We'll descend back down the way we came in time for the 2:30pm boat back to Cleetwood Cove. From there, we'll ascend 700 feet to the Cleetwood Cove Trailhead on Crater Lake Rim.
From the trailhead, we'll return to our cars and head home.
