The Solitude of Abbott Butte

Details

Abbott Butte is on the crest of the Rogue-Umpqua Divide, and is accessible on a 7 mile there and back round trip hike with 1500 feet of elevation gain (about 1,000 feet on the way to Abbott Butte, and about 500 feet on the way back.

Much of the hike passes through an 8 year old burn area from a fire in 2017.
On this hike one experiences nature's recovery from fire. Many dead trees are standing, some have fallen creating some challenging log crossings in the first 1.75 miles. The sunlit forest floor is green with many wildflowers, and has overgrown the trail in some areas. Long pants are recommended for the log crossings.

The final ascent to the top of Abbott Butte has an expansive view to the south including the Siskiyou Mountains, Mt. McLoughlin and Mt. Shasta. There are views of the Crater Lake Rim including Mt. Scott. Mt. Thielson is also visible.

Lunch will be at the top of Abbott Butte. There is a large area to spread out.

The return is the way we came.

We'll meet at 8:45am at the Dollar Tree in White City. On the way, we'll stop at Casey County Park along the Rogue River at Milepost 29 on Highway 62. There are public restrooms here with flush toilets. Bring your own toilet paper.

We'll continue on Highway 62. Between Mileposts 51 & 52, we'll turn left on Woodruff Meadows Road 68.

Follow the paved road 5.1 miles. Continue on the well maintained gravel Road 68 another 7.6 miles. At the summit is a sign "Be Fire Safe". The Abbott Butte Trailhead is on the right, just after the sign.
