What we’re about

This group was founded to empower women aged 45 and older to discover the joy, strength and transformative power of the outdoors. It was inspired by simple walks/ hikes that eventually led me to successfully summit Mt. Kilimanjaro. The experience was not only physically rewarding, but also emotionally and psychologically life-changing, sparking a passion to share the beauty of the outdoors with other women.

The name Sojourner was inspired by Sojourner Truth, who was born Isabella Baumfree around 1797 in New York. She emerged as one of the most prolific voices for abolition and women’s suffrage in the nineteenth century. Throughout her life, she traveled great distances - often on foot- lecturing on the important of freedom and civil liberties for all Americans. Her famous speech “Ain’t I A Woman?", addressed the exclusion of Black Women from early feminist movements, which helped underscore the need and urgency for Black Women to be recognized alongside other suffragists.

My mission is to create an inclusive and supportive community where all women, most especially those from traditionally underrepresented and disenfranchised groups, can experience the healing, freedom, the physical benefits, joy and confidence that comes from walking, hiking and exploring the outdoors together.

Whether you are a beginner or rediscovering your love for the outdoors, you are welcome here! Nature belongs to all of us. Every SINGLE step is a victory and every woman has the power to climb mountains - whether vertical or within herself!

Come out, join us for a great day of fun, while meeting new people, physical activity and enjoy great conversation over brunch!
