What we’re about
Being a sole or single parent is hard! You don't know how fragile your support network is until you suddenly become a parent responsible for raising another human being without the help of a stable partnership, family, or community. Many sole and single parents find themselves in situations where those they could once rely upon are no longer readily present, and yet the need to connect, network, recharge, support and be supported, with people who understand their circumstances*,* are still there!
The purpose of this group is to build a community of parents who may not have strong support networks nearby or are otherwise seeking genuine friendships for themselves and/or their child(ren) with others that can relate to this dynamic. For the purposes of this group, "sole or single" parents refers to individuals who have full or shared custody of their child(ren) and don't live with a partner (at least until someone can help recommend better identifying language). For now, events will be focused on providing regular group opportunities for sole parents to connect with each other in Northern Utah (Wasatch Front and nearby areas), as well as schedule playdates with our kids.
Safety will always be a top concern and so this group will be private to allow for some form of vetting to occur. If the actions of another member cause you to feel unsafe, we ask that you bring it up right away. Additionally, there is no single mold of what a "sole or single parent" is so we also hope to build a community that emphasizes inclusion, belonging, understanding, and respect.
As this group grows and trust is established, this may also become a safe place to ask for and lend support (childcare, transportation, donations, service, etc) within the community. Whatever this group grows into will be determined by its members, but above all let's focus on building sincere, down-to-earth, and solid friendships, not just transactional ones... That being said, this is NOT intended to be a dating group - creating regular opportunities that foster genuine relationships is the goal. More details will be figured out as more people join and we develop this space into one that reflects our best values.
