Sound Affects #27: Ellie Ramsden, Steven Bamidele & Daniel Spicer

Details

Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music-lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.

Speakers:
Steven Bamidele is a Nigerian-born, London-based singer, songwriter, musician and producer. His isolated upbringing has shaped the introspective nature of his songwriting, which pairs with his distinctive reverb-drenched falsetto, synth textures, and syncopated beats to create a forward-thinking soulful sound

Daniel Spicer is a writer, broadcaster, improviser and poet based in Brighton. He writes about music for The Wire, Jazzwise, Songlines and WeJazz magazines, and for The Quietus website. He is the author of The Turkish Psychedelic Music Explosion: Anadolu Psych 1965 to 1980 and Peter Brötzmann: Free-Jazz, Revolution and the Politics of Improvisation, both published by Repeater books. His long-running radio show, The Mystery Lesson, can currently be heard at onejazz.net. He plays piano and other things in the improvising trio In Threads.

**Ellie Ramsden **is photographic artist based in London. She won the Portrait of Britain award last year, presented by the British Journal of Photography, and she's worked with Adidas, VICE and the Museum of Youth Culture. She documents British subcultures and communities, and explores themes such as community, youth culture, gender equality and alternatives to the mainstream. Much of her work aims to stimulate discussion, question stereotypes and present alternative perspectives. Her photo-book, Too Many Man, documents the women of the grime scene.
