Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music-lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.

Speakers:
Emilia Elfrida - The singer of political punk band The Menstrual Cramps and an activist working in the homeless charity sector. Along with fellow comrades, they set up Bands Boycott Barclays: a collective protesting Barclays bank's sponsorship of The Great Escape and other festivals. Together they used their cultural power to boycott Barclays in solidarity with the people of Palestine. This action led to Barclays withdrawing sponsorship of The Great Escape, Download festival, Latitude and the Isle of Wight. Emilia will be speaking to us about DIY punk and activism.

Suzanne Rolfe, Melita Dennett & Alien Alarms: The Sound of the Wilde Volk.
For over eight years, Suzanne and Melita have been exploring modern-day esoteric European masked festivals. Their adventures have taken them from the dark and devilish Krampus parades in Germany, the cumbrous horned processions of the Perchten in Austria, to the colourful Kurkeri Masquerades of Bulgaria. Along the way, they have documented their adventures through photography and field recordings, and they will present these as part of their Wilde Volk installation at Rottingdean Windmill on the 26th/27th of July. Their talk for Sound Affects will focus on the aural aspect of these festivals. As part of this project, they have invited The Spirit of Gravity Collective to reimagine some of the recordings, which are now being developed into a Wilde Volk playlist. Musician Jim Purbrick (AKA Alien Alarms) will talk about how he took one of the field recordings and created a demonic soundscape which will terrify us all!

Doors at 7.30pm, it begins at 8 and is over by 10.30pm.
