Sound Hackers meet up (in person)

Details

Sound Hackers is a group for anyone messing about with sound. We share projects, make music and learn about cool devices, techniques and technologies.

***** this event is for the IRL/meatspace/in person event. if you're attending online please do NOT get a ticket here. Instead, RSVP to the online event and you'll get a link to the stream once it's set up *****

The upcoming Sound Hackers evening will include talks, demos and performances from special guests including:

  • Lara Grant, who will be talking about her modded musical sewing machines, followed by a performance with her machines.
  • Portland's Synth Library, who will be sharing information about their community-based lending program for synthesizers, then demoing some of their collection.
  • Matthew Rempes, who will be talking about his work with video synthesis and scan processing, followed by a short A/V set.
  • Mykle Hansen, who will share stories from designing, funding and manufacturing Pocket Integrator, an open source add-on board for Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator.

Before and after the talks there will be drinks and snacks and nerding out.
Table space, power and wifi will be available, so please bring along your projects and instruments to show off to others. Bleeps and bloops guaranteed.

Sound Hackers is for people interested in any kind of sound hacking at any level: guitar pedal DIYers, live coders, strange musicians, curious newbies, synth module designers, acoustic scientists, music tech lovers, and experimental instrument creators of all genres.

We welcome all sounds and any type of instrument, including analog, digital, acoustic, generative, musical, discordant, modern, ancient, scientific and mystical.

Background to the event and organizer

I'm Helen Leigh and I've been part of the DIY instrument communities in both Berlin and London. I live here in Portland now, and I wanted to start something that combines my two favourite sound hacking events in those cities: laid back chats with beers and projects on tables at a Music Tech Stammtisch in Berlin, and short, creative talks and performances at Hackoustic's bi-monthly events in London.

We are based in the Crowd Supply building up in North East Portland. As well as giving us free space, Crowd Supply are kindly sponsoring drinks and snacks to make the tram, cycle or drive up all the way to the top of Williams more enticing!

NB: We are on the top floor of the big red building. Go up the ramp and straight ahead. Google will take you round the corner to the train tracks but don't believe it - our entrance is on NE Farragut St.
