What we’re about
Sound Hackers is a group for anyone messing about with sound. We share projects, make music and learn about cool devices, techniques and technologies.
Come along to Sound Hackers if you're interested in any kind of sound hacking at any level: guitar pedal DIYers, live coders, strange musicians, curious newbies, synth module designers, music tech lovers, and experimental instrument creators of all genres.
A Sound Hackers night will typically include one or two short (15 mins or so) talks or performances, then a handful of 5 minute open mic slots for people to share what they've been working on, or tell us about something cool they've seen out in the world.
Before and after the talks (no more than one hour total) there will be drinks and snacks and nerding out. Bleeps and bloops guaranteed. Please feel free to bring along your projects and instruments!
We welcome all sounds and any type of instrument, including analog, digital, acoustic, generative, musical, discordant, modern, ancient, scientific and mystical.
Sound Hackers is brand new. I'm sure the shape of this event will change, but you can't get anywhere without starting somewhere, so let's go!
Background to the event and organizer
I'm Helen Leigh - hia! - and I've been part of the DIY instrument communities in both Berlin and London. I live here in Portland now, and I wanted to start something that combines my two favourite sound hacking events in those cities: laid back chats with beers at a Music Tech Stammtisch in Berlin, and short, creative talks and performances at Hackoustic's bi-monthly events in London.
We're kicking off the event based in the Crowd Supply offices up in North East Portland. It's a little out of the way but we have a large and attractive space for zero dollars with no neighbours to worry about. Plus Crowd Supply are kindly sponsoring our drinks and snacks so that makes the tram, cycle or drive up to the top of Williams all the more enticing!
