NEW LOCATION:: Googleplex Visitor Center

Silicon Valley is home to some of the world's most ambitious, successful, and connected people. Yet, beneath the surface, loneliness is becoming an increasingly pressing concern.

Loneliness and social isolation have risen sharply in parts of the Bay Area, with San Mateo County reporting a 38% relative increase between 2018 and 2022—prompting officials to declare loneliness a public-health crisis.

But what does it actually mean to be lonely? Is loneliness simply the absence of companionship, or can we feel profoundly alone even when surrounded by people?

In this meetup, we'll explore loneliness through a philosophical lens (BUT NO NEED TO BE A PHILOSOPHY PRO!!!!), asking questions such as:

  • What constitutes loneliness? Is it an inevitable part of the human experience, or something we can overcome?
  • Happiness and purpose: Does having a strong sense of purpose protect us from loneliness, or can our pursuit of happiness sometimes make us lonelier?
  • Relationships and solitude: Can we be lonely in a committed relationship? Can we be genuinely fulfilled while single?
  • Ambition and success: In a culture that celebrates achievement, career growth, and relentless ambition, are we inadvertently sacrificing meaningful human connections?
  • Finding a way forward: What can philosophy teach us about building fulfilling relationships, embracing solitude, and cultivating a deeper sense of belonging?

We'd love to hear your perspectives, experiences, and questions!

No formal background in philosophy is necessary. Our goal is to create a welcoming, open-minded, and respectful space where people from all walks of life can exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another.

And while loneliness is a serious subject, our conversations don't have to be solemn! Expect thoughtful discussions, different perspectives, a little humor, and hopefully some wonderful new connections along the way.

After all, what better way to explore loneliness than by coming together?
