The Page Turners Sep Meeting: Isola by Allegra Goodman

Details

Isola is a sweeping and lyrical novel inspired by the true story of Marguerite de la Rocque—a 16th-century noblewoman exiled to a remote island for falling in love. Alone and abandoned, she must fight to survive and rebuild her identity in the face of betrayal, isolation, and unimaginable hardship.

As we read, we’ll explore themes of survival, resilience, faith, and the reclamation of power in a patriarchal world. Goodman’s writing is beautiful and deeply introspective—perfect for a rich group discussion.

A few questions to think about before we meet:
• How does Marguerite transform over the course of the novel?
• What role does faith play in her survival?
• How does isolation both challenge and empower her?
• What did you make of the book’s narration style and emotional tone?

Looking forward to seeing everyone there and hearing your thoughts!
