Location: ArtServe

IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A STAND-UP COMEDY CLASS
You do not have to be a comedian.
You do not have to prepare jokes.
You do not have to be the funniest person in the room.
And you do not have to stand alone in front of an audience trying to make people laugh.
Improvisation is about listening, reacting, communicating and being present in the moment.
And yes—we usually have a lot of fun doing it!
WHAT IS “A TASTE OF IMPROVISATION”?
Maybe you've always wondered what improv is about but weren't ready to commit to a full class.
Maybe the idea of making something up without a script makes you nervous.
Or maybe you're an actor who wants to become more spontaneous, improve your listening skills and learn to trust your instincts.
That's exactly why I created this workshop.
A Taste of Improvisation gives you three hours to experience improv in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment.
We'll start simply.
Then, little by little, we'll build.
You'll work with other people—not by yourself—and discover that improvisation isn't about trying to think of something clever.
It's about listening to what you're given and responding honestly.
WHAT WILL WE WORK ON?
We'll use a variety of improvisational exercises designed to help you:

  • Listen instead of planning your next response
  • React naturally in the moment
  • Become more comfortable making choices
  • Build confidence
  • Work with a partner
  • Accept what another actor gives you
  • Use your imagination
  • Develop spontaneity
  • Learn to trust your instincts
  • Let go of the fear of making a mistake
  • Have fun while learning

One of the wonderful things about improvisation is that there isn't always a “right” answer.
Sometimes the unexpected choice is the most interesting one.
FOR ACTORS
Improvisation can be an extremely valuable tool for actors.
Scripts give us words—but actors still have to listen, react and live truthfully in the moment.
Improv helps develop those muscles.
It can also help when something unexpected happens during an audition or performance.
Instead of freezing, you learn to stay present and continue.
NOT AN ACTOR? YOU'RE WELCOME TOO
Improvisation isn't only for performers.
The same skills can help with everyday communication, public speaking, business situations and social confidence.
Learning to listen, respond and think on your feet can be useful almost anywhere.
AND REMEMBER — THIS IS NOT STAND-UP COMEDY
I want to emphasize this because people sometimes hear the word “improv” and immediately think they have to be funny.
You don't.
Stand-up comedy generally involves one performer presenting prepared or developed material to an audience.
That's not what we're doing.
In this workshop, you'll be interacting with other people, responding to situations and discovering what happens together.
If something funny happens naturally—and it probably will—we'll enjoy it.
But you are never required to tell jokes or “be funny.”
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Adults 18+ — All Levels
No previous acting or improvisation experience is required.
Beginning actors are welcome.
