EVERYONE WORKS ON CAMERA IN THIS WORKSHOP
You receive a script.
You have very little time to prepare.
And then someone says:
“Whenever you're ready.”
For many actors, that's when the nerves begin.
Cold reading doesn't have to be frightening.
It is a skill—and like every other acting skill, it can be learned, practiced and strengthened.
This three-hour workshop is designed to help you become more comfortable, confident and prepared when you're handed material with little or no rehearsal time.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE A COLD READ IN 15 MINUTES OR LESS?
That's one of the things we're going to work on.
When you receive material shortly before an audition, you don't have time to analyze every word.
You need to know what to look for first.
We'll work on how to quickly identify:
- Who you are
- Who you're talking to
- What you want
- What's happening in the scene
- Your relationship to the other character
- Where the scene changes
- What information in the script really matters
- How to make strong choices without overthinking
The goal isn't to memorize the material in 15 minutes.
The goal is to understand enough to act it.
THE ICE-COLD READ
What happens when you don't even get 15 minutes?
Sometimes you're handed material and expected to begin almost immediately.
That's what I call the Ice-Cold Read.
We'll work on techniques that can help you approach material even when preparation time is extremely limited.
Instead of panicking because you don't know what's coming, you'll learn how to quickly find the information you need and begin making acting choices.
EVERYONE WORKS ON CAMERA
This is not a three-hour lecture.
You'll work.
We'll put the cold readings on camera and play them back.
That playback is important.
What you think you're doing and what the camera actually sees aren't always the same thing.
We'll watch your work together.
I'll critique and coach you.
We'll look at what's working, where there are opportunities to strengthen the audition, and what adjustments can make the reading more effective.
Then you'll have the opportunity to apply those adjustments.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ PERFECTLY
Cold reading isn't about proving that you're a perfect reader.
It's about acting while you're holding a script.
We'll work on keeping the scene alive instead of burying yourself in the page.
You'll learn how to use the script without allowing the script to control the performance.
We'll work on:
- Staying connected to your scene partner
- Listening instead of simply waiting for your next line
- Making choices quickly
- Using the page comfortably
- Recovering when you lose your place
- Staying in the scene when something unexpected happens
- Keeping your performance natural
- Trusting yourself
DISSOLVE THE FEAR OF COLD READING
The techniques you learn in this workshop aren't meant to be used once and forgotten.
They're tools you can practice and use over and over again.
The more comfortable you become with the process, the less frightening it becomes when someone hands you a script and says:
“Take a few minutes and we'll bring you in.”
My goal is not to make every actor work exactly the same way.
Using my many years of experience teaching, coaching, acting and working in casting, I look for what works for the individual actor standing in front of me.
Sometimes the actor is already there.
We simply have to get them out of their own way.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Adults 18+ — All Levels
Beginning actors are welcome.
Experienced actors who want to strengthen their cold-reading skills are welcome.
Actors preparing for auditions are welcome.
If cold reading makes you nervous, this workshop is especially for you.
I teach in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment where actors can take chances, explore different choices, receive constructive feedback, learn and grow.
