===== EVENT DESCRIPTION =====

We will explore how we relate to others and ourselves; compare healthy relating to relating through codependency and/or addiction. Hopefully we will share our relating codependency addiction experience so we can learn from each other how to transform them to growth.

HEALTHY RELATING is based on mutual respect, honesty, emotional responsibility, and freedom. Each person can care deeply while still having boundaries, separate needs, and a stable sense of self.

Relating through codependency often centers on over-functioning, rescuing, pleasing, controlling, or needing to be needed. Love may become mixed with anxiety, guilt, fear of abandonment, or self-sacrifice. Boundaries blur, and one person’s mood, choices, or approval can start to define the other’s emotional stability.

Relating through addiction often centers on compulsion, avoidance, secrecy, emotional numbing, or instability. The substance or behavior can become a third force in the relationship, competing with trust, intimacy, responsibility, and presence. Loved ones may adapt around the addiction, sometimes sliding into codependent patterns.

In short: healthy relating says “I care about you and I remain myself.” Codependent relating says, “I need to manage you so I feel okay.” Addictive relating says, “I use something outside myself to regulate, escape, or cope, even when it harms connection.” Recovery moves relationships toward honesty, accountability, boundaries, self-awareness, and genuine intimacy.
