Littlecote House & Roman Villa and Canal Boat Trip

Details

This is a full day trip, to include a visit to Littlecote House & Roman Villa followed by a canal boat ride at Hungerford.
We’ll meet at the visitors car park at Littlecote House at 10.15am. The address is Warner Hotels - Littlecote House, Hungerford RG17 0SU. From B4192 follow the signs for Littlecote House. When you reach the house take the left road and the car park for visitors to the Villa is down on the right .
Here we’ll visit the site of the Roman Villa, walk round the grounds and take a look inside Littlecote House, a Grade 1 Tudor Manor, where we can stop for refreshmehttps://www.visitpewseyvale.co.uk/business-directory/littlecote-roman-villa-mosaic/aic/ Parking and entry is FREE.
Around 1pm we’ll take the short drive into Hungerford where people will have free time to browse the antique shops before meeting up to catch the Rose of Hungerford. The barge is located at Canal Walk, just off Hungerford High Street (RG17 0EQ). Departing at 2.30pm and returning at 5.00pm
The 2.5 hour public return trip goes through Dun Mill & Wire Locks, passing under some classic canal bridges, we go east, tracking the River Dun with its multiplicity of fish farms, and on the edge of the lovely Hungerford Port Down. Beside the first lock, Dun Mill, is one of the famous fortified “Pill Boxes”, built as part of a defence line along the canal at the start of World War II, and manned by the Home Guard. Beyond the lock, the Dun flows into the beautiful chalk-stream River Kennet in the valley below. Following the river valley, we then pass through Wire Lock. Here – depending on the conditions – passengers can disembark briefly to stretch their legs and enjoy the views of the beautiful Berkshire countryside. They may also, under the supervision of our crew, assist in opening the gates and working the lock paddles! Meanwhile, we turn the boat below the lock, before picking everyone up again for the return trip to the Wharf.
There is a licensed bar onboard providing snacks and refreshments. There is a wheelchair lift for anybody unable to board and disembark the boat using steps. The lift will only accommodate self-powered chairs.
The cost for the canal trip is £12 and must be prebooked at https://katrust.org.uk/our-boats/the-rose-of-hungerford-bookings/ Make sure you book the 2.5 hour Wire Lock trip @ 2.30pm!
Please only rsvp once you have bought your ticket. If you wish to come along I suggest you buy your ticket asap as this is a public trip and may well sell out.
Parking is limited in Hungerford and it is suggested that people car share where possible.
There is no planned lunch venue, however there is the opportunity to purchase refreshments in Warners, Hungerford and on the canal boat. Alternatively you can bring a picnic.

In the lead up to this event Heather is staying for a 3 night break at Warner’s Littlecote House, and is welcoming members to join her. Please message her for more details if interested.

This event is shared with another Meetup Group.
